Italian Greyhound Pitfalls

Not Everyone is Cut Out to be an IG Owner

Most everyone could be a great match for an Italian Greyhound. Be aware if you’ve never owned one of these beautiful babies that they have a few unusual quirks you’ll want to take into consideration.

  • They would rather sit on your head than in your lap.
  • They are like a cross between a cat, a dog, a small child and a monkey. Yes, they are beautiful, delicate dogs. But they are comical and get the zoomies easily. They will climb, jump and go places—like your kitchen counter—you never expected they could reach. They will happily vomit, pee and poo in your bed just because they love you so much, they won’t leave your side even if they need to go potty. They are very childlike and don’t like to be scolded or punished. And they think they can fly, taking flying leaps off your furniture without a second thought. Your couch is no obstacle to a determined Iggy; it’s just a hurdle to do a high jump over.
  • Much like a child, they get overheated sometimes, especially under too many blankets at night, which can cause them to vomit unexpectedly.
  • They are not the quickest at potty training. Patience and consistency is a must on your part.
  • They do not like the cold, snow or rain, and will be reluctant to go outside for walks or bathroom breaks.
  • They are fine with young children with supervision. Young Iggy bones can break if you’re not careful, and a broken leg is expensive to fix.
  • They do better in pairs; they like to flock, and will flourish with an IG friend or two or three.
  • Sometimes, especially as puppies, it can be a challenge to get them to eat enough. They are not chow hounds like other dog breeds. They are social butterflies, and as a good owner, you’ll really need to encourage proper eating. Otherwise, they can be distracted by a toy, you or a squirrel. The world is exciting, and they like seeing as much of it as they can—and just forget they should eat sometimes.
